Why Construction Companies Need GPS Tracking

In a recent independent survey, more than 1/3 of U.S. employees say they have been tracked by GPS on the job. For workers in the construction industry, that number shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Large-scale (and even some not-so-large-scale) construction project require a lot of workers and vehicles to transport tools and materials. Add multiple jobsites to that equation, and those workers and vehicles multiply too. With so many moving parts (literally), many construction companies are turning to GPS tracking software for help.

Not only does GPS tracking increase accountability and help keep workers safe on the job, but it also boosts productivity and efficiency on the jobsite. It can even help cut down on paperwork. But, at first, workers might not see it that way.

Some workers who have never been tracked with GPS at work feel negatively about the technology. They might worry about being tracked after hours and in their personal time, and they know that some of the most popular apps that use GPS (e.g., Facebook) are notorious data hogs. As a result, they resist installing a required GPS app on their personal devices.

Seeing that privacy, data and battery drain are among employees’ top GPS concerns, proactively addressing these concerns is the key to getting these workers on board.

Managers might assume workers are opposed to GPS tracking on the job because they don’t want their supervisors to know what they’re up to throughout the day. Surprisingly, micromanagement is last on the list of their concerns. But that doesn’t mean the concern isn’t there.

Tip: Remind workers that GPS tracking exists primarily for their safety and the efficiency of the project. It allows supervisors and forement to check in on workers across multiple jobsites so they can ensure everyone is accounted for in case of an emergency. And when it comes to fleet management, GPS tracking makes it easy for a supervisor to alert an on-the-go worker to a nearby (and sometimes last-minute) job – so no job opportunity is ever missed. Additionally, GPS tracking promotes improved work habits and helps hold workers accountable for their time and schedules.

If employees are required to install a workplace GPS app on their personal devices, there are bound to be privacy concerns. According to the same third-party survey, 45 percent of employees who had been tracked with GPS in the past either believed they were tracked 24/7 or they simply weren’t sure when the tracking started and stopped.

Tip: Honor workers’ privacy by selecting a GPS tracking app, like BuildingBlok’s Timesheets app, that respects their personal time. It should only track location when workers are actually on the clock – not when they’re on a break or clocked out for the day, and definitely not 24/7 (which is illegal in all 50 states). Then be upfront with workers. Let them know exactly when the GPS app will be tracking their location and when it won’t. It’s always a good idea to talk to employees about GPS tracking before it is turned on. In fact, in some states, failure to do so could result in a hefty fine or even jail time.

Data and Battery Drain
Here’s where the data gets a little surprising. While workers have some concerns about micromanagement and privacy, their biggest concern when it comes to installing a workplace GPS app is actually data and battery drain. In fact, 70% of those surveyed said they were most concerned the app would force them to pay for data overages or drain their battery.

Tip: Before requiring workers to install anything on a personal device, do some research. Find out how much data the app will use and ahve a backup plan in place in case the app causes employees to pay an overage. Know how much space it will take up on their personal phones too, and show them how to check their battery and data usage by app. Like BuildingBlok’s Timesheets app, any GPS tracking app or software worth its salt will use minimal amounts of data and battery, and taking the time to educate workers about these features can go a long way.

In every case, taking a proactive approach by addressing potential concerns before employing a GPS tracking system is the key to getting employees on board with the new technology. Charlie Luxton is an architectural designer, writer and television presenter. He currently presents Building The Dream, Homes By The Sea and Homes By The Med (More 4).

Charlie began his broadcasting career presenting Modern British Architects for Channel 5. Since then, he has gone on to present Britain’s Hidden Heritage (BBC 1), Restored to Glory and Rebuilding The Past (BBC 2), Homes and Property (ITV), Supercommuters and World’s Weirdest Homes (Channel 4) and Build A New Life In The Country (Channel 5). He has also worked across the Atlantic presenting Artland USA and Vertical City.

Charlie is passionate about the environment and communicating his enthusiasm for sustainable architecture and eco-friendly design. Studying at Oxford Brookes University, he achieved a first class honours degree in Architecture before going on to complete an MA at the Royal College of Art in London.

Charlie has worked for a number of architecture practices becoming a founding director of Free State in 2000. Past projects include Zoomorphic, an exhibition for the V&A and Electric Storm, a three month renewable energy event on the South Bank in London. In 2005 he left London and Free State to focus on sustainable housing. As Charlie Luxton Environmental Design he is currently working on several sustainable housing projects in London, Wiltshire, and the Cotswolds, where he now lives with his wife and two children.

Allianz Field Construction Hits Halfway Mark

Minnesota United FC has hit the halfway mark in the construction of Allianz Field, its new home that is set to open in 2019. 

Construction of Allianz Field is reportedly moving along, as the $200-million facility is currently expected to wrap up within budget and on time. That was reflected by a milestone achieved this week, when the facility’s construction process hit the 50% completion mark.

Plenty of work remains in the coming months, but signs of what the finished product will look like are in place. At this point, the stadium could be completed in February 2019, with Minnesota hosting its first MLS match there in April. :

“We’re halfway home but we have a really busy summer ahead,” project manager Greg Huber said Thursday.

The first piece of steel was raised in November after groundwork was finished.. Since then, the cement rows of the upper and lower bowls have been poured, corporate suites and club level seating is framed out, the north end beer hall is going up and the standing-only supporter’s section is coming around on the south side of the stadium.

The moonscape of the pitch is covered with limestone to accommodate the heavy cranes, earth movers and waste bins, although the intimacy of the 19,400-seat stadium is obvious. There will be little separation between fans and players.

“The aesthetic is just tremendous,” said William McGuire, Minnesota United’s primary owner. “The combination of architecture and functionality with the game-day experience is pretty overwhelming.”

Allianz Field is intended to be the anchor of a larger development plan in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood. United FC has spent the past few years planning the soccer-specific stadium, while hosting home matches at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium for the 2017 and 2018 seasons–a move that gives the a home until the new facility opens.

Snow wins Republican bid in Bedford County

BEDFORD — Bedford County native Kim Snow won the Republican nomination to run for the Bedford County treasurer’s seat during a special party canvass on Thursday.

Snow is seeking the post vacated by former Bedford County Treasurer Rebecca Jones, who announced her retirement in February. Jones — who was elected to the position in 2003 — stepped down in March. Snow will face the Democratic nominee during the general elections in November.

The treasurer is a constitutional officer elected to a four-year term, according to the county’s budget. The treasurer is responsible for collecting taxes and other revenue of the county, which includes billing and collecting current receivables and managing a delinquent collection program. The treasurer also is responsible for managing the county’s investment program.

The treasurer’s office is funded by local and state funds.

Snow received 342 votes during the primary Thursday. Her opponent, Amy Dooley Gordon, received 227 votes.

“I just want to thank the people of Bedford County for coming out tonight,” Snow said Thursday after the election results were announced. “It was very heartwarming.”

Snow, 62, is a graduate of Liberty High School in Bedford and earned her bachelor’s degree in finance from Radford University in Radford. Snow was appointed as Bedford County’s interim treasurer in March after Jones retired. Snow previously served as the director of accounting and finance for the Fostek Corporation in Bedford.

Nate Boyer, chairman of the Republican Party of Bedford, previously said political parties in Virginia use firehouse primaries when the deadline to file for a state-run primary has passed.

“We typically use the state-run primary process,” Boyer said. “This case is unusual because the previous treasurer announced her retirement past the deadline for us to use the state primary.”

Boyer on Thursday said he was “extremely pleased” with the voter turnout for the primary.

“We had 569 votes cast,” Boyer said. “I would have thought that 300 would have been high. It was a great turnout and that is what we wanted … we want people to get involved.”

Snow said her decision to run for the position was based on her current position as interim treasurer and her desire to continue serving the residents of Bedford County.

“I’m the incumbent for the position,” Snow said. “I have the experience needed, and I want to continue working for my community. … I want people here to know they can count on me.”

Thursday’s primary follows a residency challenge issued against Gordon. The challengers — Nancy Lawrence, Patricia Walker and Kristy Milton — claimed during a hearing Monday public records list Gordon’s residence as 1147 Harmony School Road in Hardy, which is in Franklin County. Gordon’s filing application for the treasurer’s seat said she lives at 1209 Amy Lane in Moneta.

Gordon testified that even though the house on Amy Lane in Moneta is listed in her mother’s name, her mother currently is living at a residence in Hardy that is listed in her husband’s name. Gordon said she started using the home in Moneta as her primary residence shortly before 2018.

Roanoke-based attorney Aaron Houchens — who represented Gordon during the hearing — provided letters from residents of Amy Lane in Moneta who said they have seen Gordon at the Amy Lane address frequently since the winter of 2017 and believe Gordon is living at the house. Houchens also provided DMV records with all three of her families’ vehicles registered in Bedford County as well as newsletters and newspaper subscriptions regularly delivered to Gordon at the Moneta house.

Bedford County Registrar Barbara Gunter on Wednesday announced a decision in favor of Gordon’s residency.
